The Parts Hangar

Teardown

It's actually pretty simple as far as removing all of the components. Just remember what nuts and bolts go to what components. I pulled every part off of my frame, including the swingarm and neck. Then sent everything that I wanted black off to the powdercoaters. Make a list of what you give to the powdercoater, as I am currently missing a rear turn signal bracket. Overall though, I am impressed with the quality of the powdercoating. I paid $135.00 to have the frame, swingarm, airbox, fork tree, and all the little parts (footpegs, side cover bracket, stands, etc...) done in gloss black. I don't plan on ever hand painting a frame again.

One part I was nervous about was the pulling apart the head bearings. Actually, it wasn't a big deal at all. I was surprised at how easy everything came apart, and more importantly, went back together. Just take a picture of how everything comes apart, or use your parts book. Use a bunch of grease to hold the ball bearings in place, and slide it all back together.

Things to Know...

Not much with the frame that I can think of. If you are getting it powdercoated. Either knock out and re-use, or better yet, and what I did, replace the swingarm bearings. They are a sintered metal that will break down with the heat from the powdercoating.

Problems I've Had in the Past

Besides the rust that was one the frame when I got it, none. Hopefully the opwdercoating will put an end to that one too.
